CASE STUDY: George and LetsTalk at The BASE George and his band, LetsTalk, utilise The BASE as a rehearsal space and creative hub. Portsmouth Guildhall Overview Following his love of music, George and his friends formed their band, LetsTalk, while still at school. But finding a suitable space and time to rehearse was always a challenge. Without a proper rehearsal space, their only option was to make the best of wherever was available to them and were often forced to resort to practicing in each other’s bedrooms – an impractical solution that left them short on space and at risk of disturbing friends, family and neighbours. The BASE: A Place to Practice, Learn, and Grow After hearing about the BASE from a teacher at school, George discovered that some of his friends had started to go and decided to go along with them. Discovering the BASE changed everything. With its soundproof spaces, the BASE gave George and his friends the freedom to play at full volume, without worrying about disturbing anyone. The space came fully equipped with the instruments and gear they needed – free of charge – allowing them to focus entirely on improving their music. The Build a Band workshops gave them the chance to develop their style and refine their sound, and now LetsTalk are gigging on their own, including playing the mainstage of the Guildhall itself. “It’s nice to just have a place where you can go and just play to your heart’s content, as loud as you want, with amps everywhere. And if you don’t have an instrument, there’s instruments everywhere, and leads. If you don’t have anything, you can still just play here and do whatever you want.” – George Support The BASE If you donate to our BIG GIVE campaign between the 3rd and 9th of December, your generous donation will be DOUBLED! George was able to attend workshops on music composition and explore different genres, giving him exposure to new styles and techniques. With expert guidance and encouragement from skilled mentors, he started to learn how to develop his skills and explore his creativity in new ways. “Of course, you want to learn, you want to be really good at certain genres, but it’s good to just have some variety, you know?” – George Photo Gallery Check out some photos of LetsTalk performing at the Takedown Showcase Final! A Creative Spark For any young person passionate about music, the BASE is the perfect place for them to develop their creativity. Conveniently located at the Guildhall, it’s easy to get to, with flexible hours and a supportive team of people who genuinely want to help young musicians grow. The BASE has been instrumental in George’s journey so far, offering the tools, skills, and confidence needed to take his music to the next level. “If you just want to rehearse a little bit, or if you don’t and you want to just get better at music, then it’s really good to have people actually guiding you and teaching you how to do that. Because, most of the time I was completely self-taught. I had a little bit of help in school, but it’s good just every now and then get a little bit of help from one of the people that’s here to just, you know, push me a little bit better, to just learn a bit more and do a bit more.” – George Support The BASE to Empower More Talented Young People By supporting the BASE, you’re helping talented and creative young people like George access spaces, resources, and mentorship that allow them to pursue their musical dreams.
