Unveiling New Horizons at Portsmouth Guildhall!

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 7 PM in The Lens Studio our Harbour artists will “Embark”. This marks a departure from the safety of the Harbour programme and the beginning of a new journey for our artists.

“Harbour” is a place of preparation—a place to moor, stock up, and plan. “Embark”, however, is the point of departure, where our artists set forth into their own uncharted waters. This event the moment when Harbour Artists move beyond the confines of preparation and venture into new artistic territories.

“Embark” is also a collaborative event where the three current Harbour Artist companies come together to share and explore their works-in-progress. We may get presentations, micro-performances, explanations, or simply discussions. These artists, Thomas Buckley, Luke Brown & Sarah Forbes and Catherine Carter from Hurly Burly Theatre Company, will address current work and challenges, seeking to evolve their practice through peer engagement and encountering diverse perspectives.

When and Where:

  • Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2024
  • Time: 7 PM
  • Venue: The Lens Studio, Portsmouth

The first aim of “Embark” is to support the development of our Harbour Artists’ practice. By providing a platform for experimentation and risk-taking, we hope to encourage new artistic directions and cultural conversations. The event also serves to platform the work of the Harbour Programme within Portsmouth’s cultural community, inviting makers, artists, directors, venue representatives, and administrators to witness and support the evolving work of our artists.

Attendance is by invitation only, ensuring a supportive and engaged audience comprising members of Portsmouth’s cultural community, including representatives from Portsmouth Creates, Arts Council, PCEP members, practitioners, venue directors, and Guildhall staff.

“Embark” will be an informal and safe space for artistic exploration. We emphasize supporting and understanding how artists can develop their impact within self-defined parameters. The event encourages a spirit of curiosity and friendliness among the audience and a willingness to experiment and take risks among the artists.

Each Harbour Artist company will present their work for approximately 20 minutes, with a maximum presentation length of 60 minutes per company. The event includes a short interval between each of the three companies, ensuring a relaxed and reflective atmosphere. The evening will conclude by 9 PM.

If you are supportive of this programme and would like to attend and support the development of the named Harbour Artists please get in touch with Rupert Rowbotham, Arts Development & Partnerships Co-ordinator, for Portsmouth Guildhall at rupert.rowbotham@portsmouthguildhall.org.uk. Embark promises to be an evening of innovation, reflection, and development; we look forward to sharing this occasion with you.
