Now Announced & On Sale!
Portsmouth Guildhall is delighted to welcome Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to the city for the very first time on Thursday 19th October with a Baroquebusters concert that will present the classic hits from the hottest composers of the 18th Century!
Featuring the best-loved pieces of the era, these are tunes you will most certainly know and love. From the radio, in adverts or soundtracks, remixed as pop songs or from hearing them live, this exceptional concert will explore why these pieces became popular in the first place and why they remain so today.
Music to be performed includes The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel, Air on a G String, Well-Tempered Clavier, ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s desiring’ and Brandenburg Concerto No 3 by JS Bach, Spring from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, Pachelbel’s Canon, plus music by Albinoni, Lully and Rameau.
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is a trail-blazing ensemble that does things a little differently. Playing on period instruments, you will hear the music as the composers might have imagined it.
Formed in 1986, a group of inquisitive musicians took a long hard look at orchestra and decided to start again from scratch, throwing out the rulebook! Put a single conductor in charge? No way. Specialise in a particular era? Too restricting. Perfect a work and move on? Too lazy. Since then, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has shocked, changed and mesmerised the music world, standing for excellence, diversity and exploration.
There is no orchestra in the world quite like it! If you have never been to a classical concert or are a seasoned regular, you are sure to enjoy an evening with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
Baroquebusters with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and a Fright Night Halloween Special by The South Coast Symphonia are exciting additions to the classical programme of Portsmouth Guildhall which hosts full seasons of concerts by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Portsmouth Chamber Music each year.
Tickets to see Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Portsmouth Guildhall start from just £5 and are available now in person at the Box Office or online here!
