We are currently embarking on a 10 year renovation project of this iconic Portsmouth venue.
So why are we doing this? Quite simply the Guildhall is intrinsic to Portsmouth’s heritage. It’s been at the heart of cultural, civic and community life in the city for over 125 years and we want to ensure it stays that way. To do nothing is not an option if we want this venue to grow and flourish.
We also know that the arts have the power to increase well-being, unlock potential and bring communities together.
When the Portsmouth Cultural Trust took over the management and lease for The Guildhall in 2011, we knew we’d taken on a real challenge. The venue had seen very little investment since its reopening by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1959, and the interior of this historic building, to say the least, was beginning to look very tired and jaded.
However from the beginning the board and senior management team could see the potential for this much loved venue to become one of country’s leading music, arts and entertainment hubs.
Like many cultural venues around the UK we’ve seen our local government funding severely cut in the last few years.
However better access, improved facilities and an increased cultural offering will support increased visitor numbers to the venue and make it more self-sustainable.
We have the vision and the potential. We now have the challenge ahead to find the funds to match our ambitions.
Our ambitions for the Guildhall rely on the generosity of the public, businesses, trusts and foundations who share our vision and commitment. People and organisations that want to be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity to preserve and restore this wonderful building for the benefit of the local community.
To do everything we want to do will cost an estimated £15 million. We aren’t planning to do everything at once, partly due to the fact it’s a large amount of money to raise in one go, but also because we don’t want to have to close the venue for long periods.
The project will therefore be split into four phases over 8-10 years. Phase one is due to start in early 2017 and will cost an estimated £3 million - not an easy task but we believe it’s achievable.
