Algwyne de Castro, BA (Hons) Illustration student from the School of Art Design and Performance at the University of Portsmouth has won this year’s Graduate Guildhall Award, which includes an exhibition at Portsmouth Guildhall from 23 July until 23 October 2019.
The work selected at the University’s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries annual Graduate Show 2019 then toured at D&AD’s New Blood Festival in London, prior to this show. Additionally, he won Strong Island’s ‘One to Watch’ Award and was selected for a University’s Art Collection Award.
Le Coeur de la vie is a homage to two of the artist’s favourite things, music and art, as well as his admiration and fascination of French culture.
Inspired by La Belle Époque era in the 19th century, French artist Henri Matisse and plants from the natural world, he has brought music lyrics to life using shape and colour. Algwyne has incorporated his love for Matisse’s work using digital methods, such as Procreate to accomplish his own techniques to develop a unique structure and style, and the Risograph method of printing resulting in unique mixtures of fluorescent ink colours. Le Coeur de la vie is French for John Mayer’s song ‘The Heart of Life’.
Le Coeur de la vie is part of an ongoing collaborative exhibition programme hosted by the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries and The Guildhall Trust to enrich the visual and cultural experience of visitors to the Guildhall. The aim is to offer students and alumni an opportunity to exhibit their work to a broad public audience, developing their professional creative practice.
