The drama of the human voice combines with the expressive power of abhinaya (mime and gesture), to bring alive key moments from Greek myths. A duo of Odissi dancers harness the beauty and pathos of poetry and song which ring out the dilemma of Dido, the abandonment of Ariadne, and the yearning of Radha. The universal themes of unrequited love and acceptance of fate are played out tenderly by five superb musicians and dancers.
The two dancers Elena Catalano and Khavita Kaur are members of the Odissi Ensemble, the only professional odissi company in the UK, who have to their credit Gods and Mortals 2016, Sacred Shapes 2018. They are joined by musicians Preetha Narayanan (violin), Kaviraj Singh (santoor, vocals) and Fiona Hymns (soprano).
Songs of the Heart is a performance for lovers of music and dance in which the two art forms are equal partners. The genre blending will offer followers of both classical Indian and Western music new experiences.
