The next Away With Words event is on Monday February 17th “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah and other lyrical gems of 60s popular music: a personal view”

Teacher, Academic, Musician, Music Historian & Artist Dave Allen, discusses some of his favourite1960s songs, considers how lyric writing differs across styles and genres and asks why lyrics became more complex during the decade and whether complex necessarily means effective.

A professional musician and song writer in the 60’s where he was signed to Warner‐Chappell and Polydor, he still plays in two bands, led the ‘Pompey Pop’ project and is a visiting Fellow at UoP having retired as Head of the School for Media and the Performing Arts. More recently he has concentrated on painting and is a member of Fire Monkeys Arts collective.

In an exciting partnership, Portsmouth Poetry and Portsmouth Guildhall Studio have teamed up to bring spoken work events to the city centre venue. The monthly events with are offered on a ‘pay‐ what‐you‐feel’ basis making this one of the city’s first truly inclusive cultural events. Every month from October 21st will see a different and original approach to spoken word including poetry, drama, lyrics, comedy and much more.

“The dynamic new Guildhall venue supported by Victorious Festival is perfect for spoken word and with a bar and price‐friendly entry will enable us to experiment with many different approaches to an increasingly popular and culturally diverse form of art and entertainment” said Josh Brown, one half of the local arts organisation that has built a reputation for innovative educational and community projects and has been a regular contributor to Portsmouth Festivities since it began three years ago.

The evening runs form 7.30 to 9.00
