Earlier this month, the Guildhall Trust launched a brand-new dance event for Schools and Colleges, called Dance Live! As interest in the show has peaked nearly 50 schools and colleges from the region, read up on the latest from the show’s producer and CEO of the Guildhall Trust, Andy Grays

What is Dance Live?

Dance Live! is a new schools dance competition for junior and senior schools up to 6th Form College.

What makes Dance Live unique from other school dance events?

I’ve worked around professional theatre and dance for over 30 years, and I’ve seen how digital technology has vastly expanded the opportunity for choreographers and directors to be increasingly creative. In today’s professional world of dance, digital technology is at the forefront of dance innovation.

This competition will have a large LED screen on stage and ask schools to create work incorporating this screen. In other words, the screen is the set!  We’ll allow some props but Dance Live! is all about the creative content merging with the dance piece.

What makes Dance Live so exciting?

The focus on dance and creative digital technology will excite both participants and audiences. The possibilities are limitless for young creative minds.  I saw ‘An American in Paris’ in London a few years ago, most of the production used video mapping, this is now increasingly the norm for musicals and theatre. It also allows the audience to engage more with the work.

What can audiences expect from Dance Live?

I think today’s young minds engage with computer games, film and technology in a way many of us of an older generation find astonishing.  I think audiences will be wowed by their imagination.

What do schools need to do to enter?

Schools must register via our website by the 25th October. Visit the Portsmouth Guildhall website to see the full breakdown of the competition and the entry form https://portsmouthguildhall.org.uk/get-involved/schools-colleges/dance-live-new-dance-event/

I’ve registered my school – now what?

If you have already registered your school, then you are confirmed as attending! Don’t worry about doing anything more, you can sit back, and we will get our information pack out to you just after October half term, with a full breakdown.

Please contact dancelive@portsmouthguildhall.org.uk if you have any enquiries in the meantime.
