Explosion! Music to Awaken the Senses - a new series of concerts

Since launching in October 2018, Portsmouth Guildhall’s new Studio supported by Victorious Festival has bought an eclectic new mix of entertainment to the city including comedy, drama, family theatre and dance with an exciting music offer which is very different to that for which the Guildhall is historically known.

To date Studio audiences have been treated to emerging musical talent Roxanne De Bastion, an artist taking the European independent music scene by storm with her fantastic lyrics, piano and cello arrangements and sibling duo, The Dunwells with their unique fusion of rock and electronics. A Tex Mex party night with Los Pacaminos featuring Paul Young and a celebration of France’s iconic legend Edith Piaf with Tina May have also featured.

This spring people can look forward to “the loudest band in skiffle”; The Gutter Brothers on Friday 5th April and 90s indie pop band; Space, with their irresistible tunes Neighbourhood, Female of the Species and Me and You Vs The World on Saturday 13th April.

The Studio now also introduces its new Explosion programme of music. Described as ‘music to awaken the senses’, the new series of concerts features the finest contemporary artists who challenge convention and explore music without boundaries. Virtuoso performances across jazz, blues, folk, world and R’n’B will explode onto the stage, providing music for the connoisseur.

The Explosion series kicks off on Friday 12th April with Antonio Forcione, described by The Guardian as “one of the great acoustic guitarists”, who with an impressive 20 albums and extensive international tours under his belt will deliver music of a rare delicacy filled with humour and passion.

This is followed on Sunday 28th April by Ian McNabb, one of the great singer/songwriters to emerge from the 80s Liverpool music scene who was founder and lead singer with chart toppers, The Icicle Works, famous for their top 40 hits Love is a Wonderful Colour and Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly). Ian has gone on to enjoy a critically-acclaimed solo career writing stunning songs with warmth, humour, cynicism and grandeur.

Hamilton Loomis is the last of this season’s Explosion artists taking to the stage on Sunday 7th July. Described as a “non-stop turbo of power”, with his infectious crowd antics and multi-instrumental talent, this Texan protégé of Bo Diddly lyrics’ create a real splendour with their direct, personal and autobiographical style.

An intimate and contemporary performance space, Guildhall Studio is already proving popular due to the quality and choice the new programme offers. Associate Producer and Programmer for the Studio, Benjamin Clabon said, “We are delighted with how the Studio has been received by the city and is very quickly establishing itself as a cultural hub in the heart of the community. We are particularly delighted to launch the Explosion series of concerts which will bring different styles of music of a very high quality for people to explore. Through our partnership with Victorious Festival we are also developing a platform for emerging creative talent in our region”.
