The Portsmouth Music Experience

In 2013, as part of the Portsmouth Cultural Trust's development programme, Dave Allen, Mick Cooper and Nigel Grundy, all with historical knowledge of the Portsmouth music scene, worked with curator Simon Poole to establish Access all Areas: The Portsmouth Music Experience to celebrate and document the vibrant Portsmouth music scene since the late 1950s.

Recording Studio

The Recording Studio can record to 16 track digital media and 8 track analogue reel to reel tape. The resource will include basic level music instruction and recording and editing workshops for all ages.

Traditional Indonesian entertainment marked the opening of World Music event

The first in a series of events showcasing World Music took place on Wednesday 11 March at the Portsmouth Guildhall. Organised in partnership with the University of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Cultural Trust, the event featured an interactive performance by the Southbank Gamelan Players, Ensemble in Residence at Southbank Centre in London, at 1.30pm, followed by a workshop at 3pm.

Southsea Skifflers

40 years ago Dave Allen and Denis Reeve-Baker started playing together in an acoustic skiffle and blues band. They are still playing in a new band today, but after retiring recently from lecturing at the University they ran a skiffle workshop last October as a part of Portsmouth’s 60+ Festival. It proved so popular that the group has continued to meet at the Guildhall every month.

NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians. Since NYJO’s founding, by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with the band.

“Back in the days when the Guildhall was a building full of council staff, who would have thought that one day it would be managed by a Cultural Trust who would open it up for community events and allow a large exhibition area dedicated to local music, clubs, pubs and venues, a 9' painted roundel and a Lambretta TV 175 on display on the first floor? But that is what has happened."

Portsmouth Guildhall management, the Portsmouth Cultural Trust (PCT), today announced a new partnership with The Southern Co-operative. that will see £50,000 of funding support provided to their new programme “Get Into Music, Portsmouth”. The announcement was made at a breakfast gathering ahead of the programme’s first Music Industry Day at Portsmouth Guildhall which was attended by 250 students from local schools and colleges.
