En eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional local art
Curator Simon Poole attempts to demonstrate that even the most contemporary art resonates with more traditional pieces. He seeks to create narratives of mood and subject matter to help unpick each piece and as such provide greater comprehension of the artists’ intention when creating their pieces. He asks that people approach the work with an open mind and remember that nearly all great art was initially controversial however accepted it is now.
Artist Susan Jane Dunford has been enthusiastic about the project since she first heard about it. The chance to exhibit in Portsmouth Guildhall is exciting for her because of its significance in her life. Born in Portsmouth, the Guildhall clock tower has been a prominent landmark during her childhood.
Her piece, as yet untitled and in production especially for this show, will draw upon Portsmouth’s famous chalky soil as well as historic architecture present in the city today. The chance to work with the Guildhall has an extra significance for her as it is the building in which she met her long term partner of some eleven years now. Artists Carl Gent and Timothy Holt (example of his work pictured) will be exhibiting alongside Susan in the show which will also feature works kindly loaned from Farnham Museum.
