Portsmouth Chamber Music Series

The Portsmouth Cultural Trust is delighted to introduce this season’s Portsmouth Chamber Music Series, in partnership with Music in the Round, the University of Portsmouth and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy an evening of chamber music in the intimate and rather unusual setting of the Portsmouth Guildhall stage (see image below)

Clara Biss violin, Rebecca Knight cello, Annabelle Lawson piano

HAYDN Piano Trio in E-flat, Hob XV:30

REBECCA CLARKE Piano Trio

BRIDGE Three Miniatures (Hornpipe, Valse Russe, and Saltarello)

SHOSTAKOVICH Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67

The Lawson Trio played here once before, in May 2012, when they gave us a wonderful account of Brahms B major trio. This time, they pair two masterworks of the twentieth-century piano trio repertoire; Dmitri Shostakovich’s darkly tragic second piano trio, written during World War Two in 1944 and the hugely passionate and compelling piano trio of British composer and viola player Rebecca Clarke, written in 1921. The intensity of these works are offset by Frank Bridge’s sparkling and charming ‘Miniatures’ and Haydn’s exploratory, final work for the piano trio genre.
