Glinka Ruslan & Ludmilla Overture
Glinka Valse from A Life for the Tsar
Kalinnikov Symphony No.1
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3

Kees Bakel conductor
Lukáš Vondrácek piano

With music from some of Russia’s greatest composers, this evening brings you the best examples of a variety of genres. Glinka uses colourful folk influences in his operas A Life for the Tsar and Ruslan and Ludmilla, reflecting the stirring emotions of Russia at the time. Kalinnikov’s First Symphony is all-round captivating, instantly charming and elegant in its melodies and harmony. Rachmaninov’s outstanding Piano Concertos have become firm favourites with pianists and audiences across the globe and it is easy to see why. His third is one of the hardest in the repertoire and requires both incredible technical talent and great virtuosity.
