Rachmaninov Symphony No.1
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Rachmaninov Caprice bohémien
Kirill Karabits conductor
Alexandra Soumm violin

Rachmaninov’s First Symphony is overflowing with the ideas and passion of a young composer, but sadly was only performed once in his lifetime. The four movements are linked by a single beautiful motif, which Rachmaninov echoes in later works. The Caprice Bohémien immediately preceded the First Symphony and shows the same iconic driving force and massive instrumental effects. Much of the music is fiery, celebrating the joy of living, but there are also moments of melancholy. Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto with its appealing melodies and opportunity for dazzling showmanship has become a firm favourite in the repertoire.
